Wilhelm Kohlhoff (1893-1971)
The Berlin painter and graphic artist Wilhelm Kohlhoff was trained at the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Berlin (KPM). During this time, he also taught himself to draw. Already in 1914, his paintings were presented in the exhibitions of the Berlin Secession. During the Nazi regime, Kolhoff’s works were classified as ‘degenerate’. He nevertheless received orders for murals and war paintings. After his capture and escape from Russian imprisonment, Kohlhoff settled in Zell and then at Hof an der Saale. He lived there from 1949 to 1953 in a studio in the east tower of the former Schiller School. There, he created his later work with still lifes, landscapes and portraits and made numerous trips, especially to Italy. Wilhelm Kohlhoff is considered a representative of the so-called ‘lost generation’ and the ‘Expressive Realism’ movement.
